History of Town Center Committee

The Village of Sugar Grove has come a long way since its incorporation in 1957 with a population of 125. Per the 2020 Census, the Village is now home to 9,278 residents and continues to grow with each passing year. As the Village continues to grow and evolve, the challenge has been, and continues to be, how to manage that growth to meet the needs and desires of residents while still maintaining the small town charm for which the Village is known.

High on the list of desires for many residents has been a central gathering space and over the years the Village has looked for development opportunities to create such a place for the community. This spring as the Village Board pursued discussions for additional municipal office space, it determined to explore the opportunity to use the need for new space as a catalyst to develop a Town Center with retail and residential components. To lead the effort, the Board created a Town Center Committee to define the elements to include for a thriving Town Center development.

The Committee, comprised of residents, local business representatives, property owners and Village Trustees, began meeting in June to define a vision for the development. While still a work in progress, it focuses on walkability, mixed-used development, public space and commons, street life and gathering spots, compact communities and lively social connections, recreation, arts, and clean energy.

“I was overwhelmed by the number of people that wanted to be a part of the Town Center effort; the energy that these volunteers have is incredible,” said Village President Konen. “Trustee Sean Herron is doing a fantastic job leading the Committee and I am proud to serve alongside him and all the members. The progress that has been made in a short period of time is remarkable.”

At the June 8, 2021 Village Board meeting, President Jennifer Konen made a presentation introducing the concept of the Town Center development. Click here to view the presentation. The Committee continued to meet throughout the summer to refine the Town Center vision and to discuss other potential locations. To view meeting minutes, click here.
