GENERAL PURPOSE
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks, and operates heavy and specialized construction equipment such as end loaders and backhoes in the general maintenance, upkeep, and repair of the public property, roadways, equipment, buildings, grounds, and Village utilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the appropriate supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
None generally. May serve as a lead worker over seasonal or temporary workers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Responsible for individual and co-workers' safety and the maintenance of a safe work environment.
- Ability to effectively and courteously work and communicate with other employees and the general public.
- Completes activity reports in a timely manner.
- Available 24 hours a day for response to emergency situations, including weekends and holidays.
- Effectively resolve problems or emergency situations that arise during the completion of assigned tasks.
- Insures the proper inspection and routine maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment after use, reports defects or needed repairs to department supervisor.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, strenuous manual labor for extended periods under unfavorable climatic and working conditions.
- Determines the locations of utility lines such as: gas, telephone, street lights, power, television, water, and sewer from the appropriate sources prior to any excavation.
- Contacts residents and business owners in the area where services will be interrupted and explains when services will be turned back on.
- Responds in a timely and efficient manner to all public and Village service requests.
- Assist other Village departments with tasks as needed.
STREETS AND PROPERTIES
- Repairs, replaces, inspects, and patches concrete, bituminous, and other street surfaces.
- Cleans, repairs, and erects signs; digs post holes and sets or pulls posts; repairs guard fences.
- Operates, maintains, repairs, and cleans large and small trucks for snow plowing, hauling, and removal or ice and snow control operations.
- Clipping, maintenance, and care of Village trees and parkways.
- Maintains, cleans, repairs and replaces Village streetlights and sidewalks.
- Performs semi-skilled labor in connection with the maintenance, construction, and development of open space, buildings, structures, landscaping, and Village facilities.
- Care and planting of lawns (turf), trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Trims trees, mows, chips branches, picks up litter/trash, and whips weeds of program maintenance or emergency/hazard maintenance.
- Participates in special events including set-up, road closures, detour signing placement, crowd control, barricading and fencing, garbage pickup and disposal, etc.
- Public Utilities
- Cleans, operates, maintains, repairs, and replaces water mains and related equipment like valves, well houses, pumps, and fire hydrants.
- Performs meter maintenance, in-house troubleshooting and repairs, removes and replaces meters and outside readers; reads commercial and residential, maintains and records B-box and vault locations.
- Operates and maintains calibration of centrifugal pumps, high and low voltage control panels, chlorinators, gas, dry and liquid chemical feeders, filters, electric motors, and other water and wastewater pumping equipment.
- Knowledge of various wastewater collection practices.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
- Serves as a member on various employee or other committees, as assigned.
- Provides support to other Village departments as needed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Valid State class A – CDL Driver’s License with Tanker Endorsement.
- Submit to required Department of Transportation Drug/Alcohol Testing.
- Submit full physical examination as condition of employment including the ability to use respirator.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, backhoe, end loader, bobcat, aerial lift truck, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
- Two (2) years of responsible maintenance, construction, maintenance, or repair experience.
- Willingness to obtain applicator pesticide certification
- Willingness to obtain IEPA water certification.
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, methods and procedures in maintenance, construction and repair. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to work in confined spaces; ability to work in strenuous manual labor conditions for extended periods under unfavorable climatic and working conditions, ability to lift heavy objects, ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, ability to work safely, ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, supervisors and the public.

The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and /or move up to 100 pounds. Specific visions abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, high noise level in the environment. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibrations. The employee occasionally works in high elevations that can exceed 25’ to 30’ in lift trucks, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

LATERAL ENTRY POLICE OFFICER
The Village of Sugar Grove is currently accepting lateral entry applications for the position of Police Officer.
The successful applicant will perform the duties of a Law Enforcement Officer.
The Village of Sugar Grove is a community of middle and upper-middle class residences covering approximately nine square miles with a 2021 census population estimate of 9,278 residents. The Village is located 50 miles southwest of Chicago, in Southern Kane County and a short distance from the City of Aurora and the City of Naperville, the two largest municipalities in the metropolitan area outside the City of Chicago.
The Police Department is comprised of 23 sworn police officers and two part-time civilian clerical staff.
Patrol shifts are eight hours with rotating days off. Each patrol officer will rotate days off for each day of the week to include weekends.
Lateral Entry Applications for Police Officer are currently being accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed weekly.
Potential $105,635 (May 1st, 2026) depending on experience/qualification*
*Your Starting Pay will be based on the number of years of previous experience as a full-time officer you already have, when you come to Sugar Grove*
- Two-three years of experience you will start at $93,377 (May 1st, 2026)
- Four-five years of experience you will start at $97,463 (May 1st, 2026)
- More than six years of experience you will start at $105,635 (May 1st, 2026)

Lateral Candidate
Candidate must be employed as a full-time officer with an Illinois law enforcement agency and shall be employed for a minimum of two (2) years and must possess a valid Illinois Law Enforcement Officer certificate from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards board.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must currently serve as a full-time police officer for a public law enforcement agency in a comparable position to that being applied for and be in good standing.
- Applicant must have successfully completed the Illinois Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Proof of certification is required with application and will be subject to final approval and waiver by ILETSB. (Part-time certification as a law enforcement officer does not meet this requirement.)
- Out of State applicants must be able to meet the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Out of State Reciprocity requirements.
- Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen and at least 23 years of age.
- Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent education.
- Must possess a valid Illinois Driver's License.
- Must be able to pass a power test.
- Must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position.
Arrest Record
Lateral applicants must not have any felony convictions nor have been convicted of certain misdemeanor offenses.
Selection Process
Each phase of the process, although not in the following order, is pass/fail and required to proceed to the next:
- Pre-screening interview by police department command staff
- Obtain Power test card through NIPSTA, Joliet Jr. College or McHenry County College (Power test card need to be dated within the past 120 days of application submittal)
- Character and background investigation and credit check
- Interview with the Police Commission
- Polygraph examination
- Post offer examinations, including but are not limited to:
- psychological evaluation
- medical examination
- vision screening
- drug screening
- All appointments are subject to a probationary period
Lateral Entry Eligibility
- An initial lateral entry eligibility list will be created from qualified applicants that submit the required application material.
- Placement on any lateral entry eligibility list shall be based upon the relative excellence of the applicants.
- In the event that prescreening identifies applicants who have certain knowledge, skills, and abilities that make those applicants more desirable for the position sought to be filled, the Police Commission may interview those applicants only for consideration.
