ENTRY-LEVEL POLICE OFFICER   

The Board of Police Commissioners of the Village of Sugar Grove, Illinoios is accepting applications for the position of police officer with the Sugar Grove Police Department.


The Village of Sugar Grove is a community of middle and upper-middle-class residences covering approximately nine square miles with a 2021 census population estimate of 9,600 residents. The Village is located 50 miles southwest of Chicago, in Southern Kane County and a short distance from the City of Aurora and the City of Naperville, the two largest municipalities in the metropolitan area outside the City of Chicago. The Village has 14 full-time, and 12 part-time Sworn Police Officers.


Salary: $69,474 - $100,605 (8 years - contract expires 4/30/2026)

Minimum Qualifications


  • U.S. citizenship and/or legal permanent resident of the United States
  • Must possess a valid Illinois Firearms Owner Identification card before being hired. (FOID Card)
  • Resident of the State of Illinois
  • No felony convictions (Note: a misdemeanor or serious traffic offense may also disqualify applicants from further consideration)
  • Valid state-issued driver's license
  • Possess 20/20 corrected vision
  • Minimum of 21 years of age by the application deadline date (May 19, 2025)
  • Be UNDER 35 years of age on the date of appointment, unless the candidate is currently employed as a police officer in a regularly constituted police department of any municipality that extends the age to 40 years of age
  • Be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D. equivalent
  • Possess a valid POWER Test card – OR - equivalent criteria as per the State standard, issued within 9 months of the application deadline date (May 19, 2025)
  • POWER Test Cards issued by NIPSTA or Joliet Junior College will be accepted.
  • Applicants must present the POWER Test card NO LATER than the application deadline date (May 19, 2025).

A maximum of (5) preference points will be awarded as determined by the Village of Sugar Grove for any one the following


  • Education: Persons who have successfully obtained an Associate's Degree in the field of law enforcement or criminal justice -OR- a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university. Copy of unofficial transcripts must be submitted with application to qualify.

 

  • Experience: Persons who have been awarded a certificate of successful completion of the Minimum Standards Basic Law Enforcement Training Course (Certified Illinois Police Officer - Full or Part Time Certified). A copy of the state-issued certification must be submitted with the application to qualify.

 

  • Military: Persons who were engaged in the military or naval service of the United States for at least one year, and were honorably discharged, -OR- who are now, or may hereafter be on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service. A copy of Form DD-214 or equivalent proof of current military service must be submitted with the application to qualify.





Mandatory Written Examination Testing

Following completion of all application materials and review of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to participate in an on-line written examination to be offered Wednesday, May 28- Friday, May 30, 2025.

LATERAL ENTRY POLICE OFFICER   

The Village of Sugar Grove is currently accepting lateral entry applications for the position of Police Officer.


The successful applicant will perform the duties of a Law Enforcement Officer.


The Village of Sugar Grove is a community of middle and upper-middle-class residences covering approximately nine square miles with a 2021 census population estimate of 9,600 residents. The Village is located 50 miles southwest of Chicago, in Southern Kane County and a short distance from the City of Aurora and the City of Naperville, the two largest municipalities in the metropolitan area outside the City of Chicago.


The Police Department is comprised of 26 sworn police officers and two part-time civilian clerical staff.


Patrol shifts are eight hours with rotating days off. Each patrol officer will rotate days off for each day of the week to include weekends. 


Lateral Entry Applications for Police Officers are currently being accepted on an ongoing basis and reviewed weekly.


Potential $100,605 Starting Salary Depending on experience/qualification*

*Your Starting Pay will be based on the number of years of previous experience as a full-time officer you already have, when you come to Sugar Grove*

  • Two-four years of experience you will start at $81,147
  • Five-six years of experience you will start at $96,713
  • More than seven years of experience you will start at $100,605

In-State Lateral Candidate

Candidate must be employed as a full-time officer with an Illinois law enforcement agency and shall be employed for a minimum of two (2) years and must possess a valid Illinois Law Enforcement Officer certificate from the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards board.


Out-of-State Lateral Candidate

Candidate must be currently employed as a full-time officer with any municipal, county or state law enforcement agency, such lateral applicant shall have been so employed for a minimum of two (2) years prior to application and shall meet the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, Out of State Reciprocity requirements.


Out-of-State Lateral applicant candidates must complete all testing deemed necessary by the Sugar Grove Police Commission. 


Minimum Qualifications

  • Must currently serve as a full-time police officer for a public law enforcement agency in a comparable position to that being applied for and be in good standing.
  • Applicant must have successfully completed the Illinois Basic Law Enforcement Academy. Proof of certification is required with application and will be subject to final approval and waiver by ILETSB. (Part-time certification as a law enforcement officer does not meet this requirement.)
  • Out of State applicants must be able to meet the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board Out of State Reciprocity requirements.
  • Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen and at least 23 years of age
  • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalent education
  • Must possess a valid Illinois Driver's License
  • Must be able to pass a power test
  • Must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position.


Arrest Record

Lateral applicants must not have any felony convictions nor have been convicted of certain misdemeanor offenses.


Selection Process

Each phase of the process, although not in the following order, is pass/fail and required to proceed to the next:


  • Pre-screening interview by police department command staff
  • Character and background investigation and credit check
  • Interview with the Police Commission
  • Polygraph examination
  • Post offer examinations, including but are not limited to:
  • psychological evaluation
  • medical examination
  • vision screening
  • drug screening
  • All appointments are subject to a probationary period


Lateral Entry Eligibility

  • An initial lateral entry eligibility list will be created from qualified applicants that submit the required application material.
  • Placement on any lateral entry eligibility list shall be based upon the relative excellence of the applicants.
  • In the event that prescreening identifies applicants who have certain knowledge, skills, and abilities that make those applicants more desirable for the position sought to be filled, the Police Commission may interview those applicants only for consideration.
