Enjoying the Outdoors: Updated Burning Regulations in Sugar Grove

The Village of Sugar Grove is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all residents. We have recently updated our open burning regulations and strongly encourage you to familiarize yourself with the important changes outlined below.

Leaf Disposal Services are Available

As a reminder to our residents: The Village of Sugar Grove provides a free leaf pick-up service through our waste collection company, LRS, from April 1st to November 30th. This service is especially important due to the new ordinance prohibiting leaf burning and open burns. Please remember to place your leaves in biodegradable bags or labeled garbage cans at the curb. There is no limit to the number of bags you can dispose of, and no stickers are required. We encourage residents to take advantage of this service.

Updated Open Burning Ordinance

Beginning in April of 2024, the Village’s ordinance prohibits burning leaves for community health and safety. However, other forms of open burning are allowed under certain conditions.

Guidelines for Open Fires

  • What Can You Burn? Only untreated wood, using an approved, self-contained outdoor wood-burning device or structure. The fire size must not exceed 3'x3'.
  •  Banned Materials: Do not burn leaves, paper, cardboard, grass, garden trash, treated materials, rags, garbage, or similar materials.
  • Permit Required:
  • For prairie restoration, a state-licensed company must adhere to state statutes and obtain a permit from the Sugar Grove Fire Department.

  • For festive or ceremonial fires, any fire over 3 feet requires a permit from the Sugar Grove Police Department.

Allowed hours include 10 am—10 pm Sunday through Thursday and 10 am—12 am Friday through Saturday.

For more information, please contact the Community Development Department at 630-391-7220.

Thank you for adhering to these guidelines and helping the Village maintain the health and safety of our community.

To ensure that there is an adequate water supply for drinking, bathing, and fire protection this summer, all residents are encouraged to comply with the Village’s water conservation ordinance. Water conservation measures are an important first step in protecting our water supply. All properties connected to the Village Water System must adhere to the following water restrictions: Even-numbered street addresses may water on even-numbered calendar dates between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Odd-numbered street addresses may water on odd-numbered calendar dates between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Automatic watering of trees and shrubs by means of root feeders within the drip line of the tree or shrub follow the even/odd restrictions stated above. There are no restrictions when watering with a hand held device. The planting of sod or grass seed is prohibited during the months of July and August unless you use a water source other than the Village Water System. Outside of the restricted summer months, property owners or residents who want to continuously water a newly seeded or sodded lawn must obtain a permit at the Public Works Department, located at 601 Heartland Drive, 630-391-7230. There is no fee for this permit; however, violators will be subject to fines. There are no restrictions when filling swimming pools that are fifty (50) gallons or less. All properties with swimming pools more than fifty (50) gallons must follow the even/odd watering restrictions during permitted hours of use. Please contact the Public Works Department at 630-391-7230 or pwadmin@sugargroveil.gov with any questions or concerns.
