Yard Waste Collection Resumes April 6 – Mulching Encouraged Due to COVID-19

Yard waste is on schedule to start next week in the Village of Sugar Grove. As a reminder, yard waste includes grass clippings, leaves, trimmings, branches and other material accumulated as the result of the care of lawns, shrubs and trees. Yard waste cannot contain any garbage, litter, rocks, sod or dirt.

While yard waste bags will be accepted, DC Recycling Systems is asking residents to adopt a conservative approach to yard waste and are encouraging residents to mulch. This is best for the environment and also significantly reduces the risk of transmitting COVID-19 through surface contact.

DC Recycling Systems is asking for community support, especially during the next three weeks, which is being considered the APEX of COVID-19. Drivers are at high risk for contracting the virus. While it is understood and expected that people will still use the yard waste bags, like any loose item outside of the containers, these can pose a health risk for drivers at this time. Yard waste bags require personal handling and the virus can be transmitted on the landscape waste bags just like loose plastic garbage bags.

Residents are also encouraged to disinfect garbage containers, especially the handles and lids of the containers, once left at the curb for service and before bringing them back as the virus can last up to 3 days on plastic.

Finally, residents are encouraged to ensure all waste is contained in the carts. Please bag garbage and put the garbage bags in a container that our trucks can lift with the automated arm. This is not mandated, but the community is asked to consider your drivers who are risking a lot to provide this service.

Thank you for your cooperation and patience.
