Petitions for candidates seeking election in the Consolidated Election (April 2, 2019) are now available. Three (3) Trustee position will be on the ballot. All are four (4) year terms, serving the community at-large.
To qualify as a candidate, applicants must be a qualified elector (registered to vote) of the Village of Sugar Grove and have resided within the corporate limits of the Village for at least one year preceding the Consolidated Election.
Illinois law imposes other qualifications to be eligible to submit a petition for candidacy and to serve as an elected official of the Village of Sugar Grove. Candidates should review Illinois law and other related codes to determine whether they meet the required qualifications. Compliance with the applicable law in having the petitions for candidacy signed and submitting them along with other required documents is the sole responsibility of the candidate and not the Village of Sugar Grove or any of its employees. Neither the Clerk nor any other employee will be responsible for reviewing petitions that are filed during the filing period to determine whether they are in compliance with the law.
Sugar Grove elections are partisan, meaning a candidate can choose to run as a party affiliated candidate or an independent candidate. Historically Sugar Grove candidates choose to run as independents in the partisan election. All Sugar Grove Trustees are elected At-Large. At-Large means that all elected officials represent the entire community. No elected official represents an area or ward.
The most often asked question is how many signatures are needed on a petition. Election code states “5 – 8%, or no more than 50 more than the minimum, whichever is greater, of the number of persons who voted at the last regular election in which the voters voted for the election of these officers. You can see the election results from 2017 here.
Candidacy petitions must be filed with the Sugar Grove Village Clerk’s Office between Dec. 10 to 17 during normal business hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Sugar Grove Village Clerk’s Office will remain open until 5 p.m. Dec. 17 to accept petitions for candidacy.
